Sunking Solar lights by Greenlight Planet is leveraging its cutting-edge technology to commercialize low-power LED lanterns. The new lights are bright, long-lasting, and practical. But more importantly, they are affordable enough that villagers have immediately purchased them in cash, meaning the technology can profitably scale to help hundreds of millions. Within months of displaced kerosene consumption, the Sun King has entirely paid for itself and families enjoy a net savings for years and years. Families that were literally burning 10% of their income on kerosene then save money and generate more income at night. Children can study at night, breadwinners can extend their income earning hours, and carcinogenic fumes are eliminated.
The company aims to provide long-lasting and affordable home lighting technology to emerging-market families as over 1.6 billion people who lack access to electricy and still use dirty, expensive and dim kerosene lanterns which costs ~US$38 billion and emits ~200 billion kg of CO2 every year.
Recently recognized by the IFC/World Bank as a Lighting Africa 2010 Outstanding Product Awards winner, the Sun King is designed with extreme durability and longevity in mind, including an oversized lithium-ion battery, an unbreakable polycarbonate shell, and water-sealed electronics.
